This is an optional gift exchange with other cruisers and a fantastic way to meet new friends, explore the ship, give and receive fun surprises and get everyone in your cabin involved in the excitement.
What are Fish Extenders?
The “fish” refers to fish shaped hooks outside cabin doors on the original Disney ships, but now those include other sea creatures and themed icons. Cruisers hang fabric pouches or bags, brought from home, on these hooks to serve as a mailbox. Disney cruise line uses these hooks/shelves to deliver your Key to the World cards and other important documents. Extenders come in many shapes and styles from custom embroidered pockets to shopping bags.
Where Do I Get a Fish Extender?
You won’t find fish extenders on board, so advanced planning is required. You can purchase them on sites like Etsy or Amazon. This design is very popular and easy to customize with patches, iron on letters or designs and more. You can leave the pouches blank or customize with names or characters. There are many creative ideas and tutorials online, many of which don’t require special skills or tools.
How Do I Sign Up for a Fish Extender Group?
The most common place to sign up for a fish extender is in a Facebook group for your cruise. You can find these groups by searching for the name of your ship and the dates. (For example, “Disney Treasure, July 10-17, 2025) There are also groups on Facebook that curate lists of cruise groups. If you don’t find your group through a search, it’s possible it hasn’t been created yet.
Once you have joined your Facebook group, you can sign up to participate in the exchange and connect with other cruisers on your sailing. Depending on the admin in your group (regular cruisers who volunteer and start a group), the sign-ups may begin well before sailing, but many wait until close to the final payment date. At some point before sailing, lists will be finalized. It’s recommended you don’t personalize gifts until lists are finalized.
Exchanges will vary by cruise, but most often you will find kids only, family, adults only and magnet or ornament exchanges. Sometimes cruisers get creative with craft beer or recipe exchanges.
You can sign up for one or several groups. Typically, you will be asked to provide names and ages (of kids) as well as favorite characters, cabin number, etc. Depending on how the groups are set up, you will usually give to between five and 10 other cabins.
What Should I Give in a Fish Extender?
The gift options for fish extenders are endless and there’s no shortage of inspiration online! Many participants enjoy giving homemade gifts, while others prefer purchasing items. Most participants spend anywhere from $10-$20 per cabin on their gifts, but it’s always a good idea to check with the group organizer for specific guidelines on budget or gift preferences.
You can choose to give a cabin gift that would be for all people in the cabin, individual gifts for each person, or a combination of the two. Remember to think of the age of the kids you are gifting. You can look at TikTok, YouTube or Facebook for gift giving ideas. If you are crafty, you could make an ornament, keychain, magnet or something custom. Popular purchased items include Legos, Disney dollar section items, candy, cups, totes, etc. You can also search Etsy and Amazon for inspiration. Be creative and give what you would like to receive. Remember the goal is to spread magic, so don’t worry too much about making it perfect or going overboard.
How Do I Distribute Gifts?
The real fun starts once you board the ship. Hang your fish extender as early as you can on embarkation day. You might consider putting it in your carry-on.
You can start distributing gifts on day one, just make sure they are all delivered before dinner on the last night of your cruise. Depending on the number of cabins you need to find, it could take a while to get your gifts delivered.
Be sure to check your extender several times a day and bring gifts into your cabin right away. This helps prevent any sticky fingers that might be tempted.
Fish extender exchanges are not “secret” so list your name and cabin number on the gifts you are distributing.
