Greetings, Disney Dreamers! As your trusted travel specialists at Axis Travel Group, we’re here to guide you through the most significant period of transformation Walt Disney World has seen in decades. Magic Kingdom is undergoing a monumental expansion, echoing Walt Disney’s own vision that his parks should “never be completed” and “continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” While this means some beloved classics are temporarily (or permanently) changing, it paves the way for incredible new adventures. Let’s explore what’s happening, what you can experience right now, and what magical surprises are coming soon!

The most visible changes are centered around Frontierland:

  1. Farewell Rivers of America & Tom Sawyer Island: As widely reported and now confirmed by the latest park maps, the Rivers of America waterways have been drained, and Tom Sawyer Island is closed and being dismantled. While nostalgic, this land is making way for something spectacular.

  2. Making Way for New Lands: This vast area is the future home of “Cars Land” (bringing the immersive Radiator Springs experience from Disney California Adventure to Florida) and the highly anticipated Villains Land – a first-of-its-kind dedicated area celebrating Disney’s most iconic antagonists. This is officially the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history!

  3. Big Thunder Mountain’s Big Upgrade: While construction is in full swing.  This isn’t just routine maintenance; it involves a complete track replacement and the exciting addition of explosives special effects, mirroring the thrilling finale of the Disneyland version. This promises an even more dynamic and immersive experience when it reopens.

  4. Frontierland Navigational Note: Expect significant construction walls in the area surrounding Big Thunder Mountain and where Rivers of America/TSI once were. Access to some pathways (like the former route to Fantasyland via the island) may be altered. Our Axis Travel Group advisors have updated maps and tips for navigating efficiently!

  • Completely updated ride vehicles with a fresh Star Command-inspired design.

  • Enhanced gameplay featuring new handheld blasters with always-on lasers, lights, sounds, and haptic feedback.

Step into a “spirited pirate tavern” offering refreshing non-alcoholic beverages, snacks perfect for all ages, and themed mocktails. It’s an ideal spot to cool off, recharge, and soak in the pirate atmosphere without a full meal commitment.

Coming VERY Soon: Starlight Dazzles!

Mark your calendars! The dazzling new nighttime spectacular, “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away” parade, makes its grand debut on July 20, 2025. Replacing the former parade, this state-of-the-art procession promises innovative lighting, stunning floats featuring beloved characters old and new, and a heartwarming musical score celebrating the power of dreams. Perspective from Axis Travel Group Owner, Natali Bohm:

“Change at Disney World is always bittersweet. We hold cherished memories of Tom Sawyer Island and the riverboats, just like our clients do. But what’s happening now is truly extraordinary.

Seeing the scale of construction for the new lands is awe-inspiring – it’s the biggest leap forward for the Magic Kingdom since its opening.

Our role at Axis Travel Group is to help guests navigate this exciting transition seamlessly. Yes, there are walls and some rerouted paths, but the magic is absolutely still here and thriving!

Tiana’s adventure is breathtaking, the new Starlight parade promises to be unforgettable, and finding hidden gems like The Beak and Barrel lounge is part of the fun. We help families focus on the incredible experiences available now while building anticipation for the spectacular future. Think of it as being part of Disney history in the making!”

Beyond the Kingdom: Walt Disney World’s Continued Evolution

This spirit of renewal extends throughout the resort:

EPCOT:

Test Track 3.0 Opening July 22nd! The high-octane attraction reopens with a new storyline focused on designing vehicles for specific environments and lifestyles, featuring even more collaborative design elements and thrilling simulations. Expect cutting-edge tech and a fresh post-show.

World Celebration: The central hub, including CommuniCore Hall & Plaza, is fully open, offering beautiful gathering spaces, exhibits, and festival infrastructure.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom:

Encanto Land (Replacing DinoLand U.S.A.): Construction is well underway! While Dinorama is closed, the thrilling DINOSAUR ride is still operating – but not for long. It will soon close to begin its transformation into an Indiana Jones Adventure, promising a high-stakes expedition through ancient ruins.

New Zootopia Show: Rehearsals are in full swing! “Zootopia: A Symphony of Wild” is set to debut later this year in the Tree of Life Theater, combining puppetry, music, and theatrical effects.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios:

Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues its thrilling evolution, and the latest wave of changes brings both nostalgic farewells and electrifying new possibilities for our favorite fuzzy friends. As your dedicated Disney specialists, we’re here to unpack the significant news shaking up the Muppets Courtyard: the closure of a long-running classic and the high-octane transformation of a park icon.

The doors of the Muppet Theater closed back in June 2025.

Monsters, Inc. DoorVault Dash: Disney’s first-ever suspended roller coaster takes guests soaring through the iconic door vault from the Monsters, Inc. films. The ride’s vertical lift system—a Disney first—propels riders 90 degrees upward into a chaotic scramble of doors, where each twist and drop syncs with scenes of monsters scrambling to collect laughs.

Character Greetings: Meet and greets with Mike, Sulley, and even a chance to “report” to Roz!

Dining: Harryhausen’s Sushi & Sandwiches: Themed after the upscale restaurant from the films, this counter-service spot will offer “sushi” rolls (likely creative wraps and desserts), sandwiches, salads, and unique beverages (both monstrous and human-friendly).

Shopping: Look for a gift shop stocked with exclusive Monstropolis merchandise and Laugh Energy collectibles.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is getting re-themed!!
As previously announced by Disney, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is set to officially close for its transformation into a new Muppets coaster starring featuring the Electric Mayhem.

This will mark the first-ever Disney ride to feature The Muppets.

In a recent update from Disney, a closing timeframe has officially been announced for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith alongside an opening timeframe for its Muppets replacement.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is now officially set to close in 2026 for its upcoming transformation. As a result, this confirms the current version of the attraction starring Aerosmith will remain unchanged for the rest of 2025. The release did not include a specific month or day yet, but mentioned that the reimagined version of the coaster starring the Muppets is also set to open in Disney’s Hollywood Studios sometime by the end of 2026.

Two new shows are available now.

“Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After”
Step into the Sunset Showcase theater, where the Magic Mirror summons guests to judge the grievances of Disney’s most notorious villains.

Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, and Maleficent take center stage to plead their cases, blending theatrical magic, humor, and audience participation. Will you side with the fur-obsessed fashionista, the hook-handed pirate, or the Mistress of All Evil? Choose wisely—some villains might have tricks (or poisoned apples) up their sleeves!

“The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure”?
Set in the enchanting Animation Courtyard, this all-new production brings Ariel’s world to life like never before. Marvel at groundbreaking digital puppetry, jaw-dropping visual effects, and vibrant set pieces that immerse audiences in Ariel’s treasure-filled grotto. Fresh Musical Numbers: Sing along to timeless favorites like “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World” alongside debut performances of “Daughters of Triton” and “Kiss the Girl.” Immersive Storytelling: The show retells Ariel’s journey through bold new aesthetics, capturing her curiosity and emotions with imaginative costumes, skillful puppetry, and a whimsical animation-inspired style.
