If you’re planning a trip to Los Angeles—whether it’s your first time in Hollywood or you’re pairing your stay with a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood—The Garland is a must. This isn’t just a hotel; it’s a full-on California daydream.
Welcome to Your California Daydream
Imagine stepping into a space where the sunshine pours through floor-to-ceiling windows, an open fireplace glows on cool California nights, and retro charm meets modern comfort. That’s The Garland.
Artisanal cocktails, farm-fresh eats, and thoughtfully curated design details all come together to transport you into a whimsical, vintage-inspired world. Tucked away behind lush greenery on seven private acres, The Garland feels like a secluded resort—but it’s just minutes from the buzz of LA and the thrill of Universal Studios.
Timeless Hollywood Style with a Modern Twist
From the moment you arrive, you’re immersed in an aesthetic that pays homage to classic Hollywood. The retro-style furnishings, sleek modern amenities, and throwback vibe create a feeling like you’ve stepped into another era. The hotel’s design nods to mid-century glamour, offering the perfect blend of nostalgia and luxury.
Even the rooms are a treat—spacious, comfortable, and stylish. Ours featured two plush queen beds, a large bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a private balcony that overlooked the serene grounds. It’s the kind of place where every little detail feels intentional.
And for the price point? You’ll be hard-pressed to find this level of quality and atmosphere elsewhere in Hollywood.
Relax and Recharge by the Pool
The Garland’s pool area is exactly what you’d hope for in a SoCal stay. Whether you’re sipping a cocktail from the Lobby Bar or soaking in the California sun, this space is made for relaxation.
You’ll find:
A beautiful pool deck with plenty of loungers
Two hot tubs (one for families, one adults-only)
A shaded dining pavilion
And even dive-in movies at sunset during summer (and weekends year-round)!
Unwind in the Courtyard
Adjacent to The Lobby and the El Dorado building, the Courtyard offers a casual, inviting atmosphere where guests of all ages can unwind. Play a game of Foosball, grab a board game, or relax under a shaded cabana with a drink in hand.
In the evenings, the courtyard comes alive with live music and tasty bites from the Taste of LA Taco Cart. It’s a great way to enjoy local flavor without ever leaving the hotel.
Stay Active at The Gym
Even on vacation, staying fit is easy at The Garland. The 24/7 gym is equipped with everything you need: treadmills, ellipticals, rowers, and free weights.
Want a little extra motivation? You can book a session with one of their top-tier personal trainers through the concierge at The Store.
Family-Friendly Features You’ll Love
One of our favorite touches? The adorable trolley that runs between The Garland and Universal Studios Hollywood. It adds charm and convenience to your day at the parks. Plus, the location puts you close to the Hollywood Hills and a variety of dining and nightlife options.
Local Shopping, Curated Just for You
Don’t leave without stopping by The Store, the on-site boutique curated by Carrington Goodman, daughter of Beverly Garland herself. Here, you’ll find handpicked, California-inspired items—from wines and cookbooks to unique gifts and travel essentials.
It’s a thoughtful way to take a little piece of California home with you.
The Story Behind the Icon
The Garland has a rich Hollywood history. In 1970, actress Beverly Garland and her husband Fillmore Crank discovered this peaceful North Hollywood property. They partnered with Las Vegas hotelier John Kell Houssels Jr. to create a hidden oasis—an intimate boutique hotel where friends, family, and travelers could escape the chaos of Los Angeles.
Decades later, The Garland has only gotten better with time. It’s a blend of heritage, hospitality, and heart—and it shows.
Final Thoughts: Why We Highly Recommend The Garland
Whether you’re coming for Universal, Hollywood attractions, or just a relaxing escape with vintage flair, The Garland delivers it all. It’s equal parts stylish and comfortable, with amenities that strike the perfect balance between fun and relaxation.
Beautiful, nostalgic, and uniquely Californian—The Garland is more than just a stay. It’s a full experience. And we can’t wait to go back.
